B1 writing: turn the task into a clear email

A useful email answers the person who wrote to you. Practise covering the requested points, choosing a suitable tone and connecting your ideas before worrying about impressive vocabulary.

Plan the message before you write

Read the situation and identify who will receive your email. Decide whether you need du or Sie. Put each requested point into a short note, then choose an order that makes the message easy to follow.

For a 30-minute practice session, try five minutes of planning, twenty minutes of writing and five minutes of checking. Adjust how you use that time as you practise; in the real exam, follow the task and timing you are given.

  1. Open: greet the person and say why you are writing.
  2. Respond: cover every requested point with enough information to make sense.
  3. Connect: give a reason, a condition or the next step when it helps.
  4. Close: make it clear whether you need an answer, then sign off in the same tone.

A short, accurate sentence is better than an advanced phrase you cannot adapt. A generic email memorised in advance may leave the actual task unanswered.

Your practice task

Original Beyond German practice task

Frau Keller organises a Saturday German practice group. You would like to join. Write to her and:

  1. Explain why you want to join.
  2. Offer two times when you could come.
  3. Ask what you should bring.
  4. Offer to contribute something to the meeting.

Write in your own notebook or editor before opening the model. Use language you understand. When you finish, underline the sentence that answers each of the four points. If a point has no sentence, add one.

Compare with a model

I have tried the task. Show a model email.

Why this answers the task

  • weil ich beim Sprechen noch sicherer werden möchte gives a reason for joining.
  • The second paragraph offers a morning and an afternoon time, then asks which suits the organiser.
  • Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen, ob … asks politely what to bring.
  • Ich könnte auch … offers a practical contribution.
  • The greeting, Sie forms and closing all address Frau Keller politely.

This is one possible response, not an official answer or the only correct wording. Compare the job each sentence does with your version. Keep a phrase only if you can use it to express your own meaning.

Check your message, then change the task

  • Task: can you point to an answer for every requested point?
  • Tone: do the greeting, pronouns and closing fit the same reader?
  • Meaning: could the reader act on the times, request or suggestion you gave?
  • Verbs: check the main verb and the end of clauses with weil and ob.
  • Readability: are your sentences complete and your paragraphs doing different jobs?

Now hide the model. The group moves to a weekday evening, and you need to ask whether a friend can join. Write a new reply. If the language works only with the original names and times, it needs more practice.

This checklist helps you notice gaps. It is not examiner marking and cannot establish an exam score. Use the official sample’s assessment information alongside your practice.
